Living in Salt Lake City is a blast no matter what season you are in! One of the best ways to enjoy the long winter months in beautiful Salt Lake City is to go sledding or tubing. So grab your sleds and be sure to dress warm, because you and your family will be whizzing down these snow-covered slopes in no time. 1. Big Cottonwood Canyon Sledding Hills Big Cottonwood Canyon also known as highway 190 carves its way through the Wasatch mountains and is notorious for providing breathtaking views. There are numerous turnoffs on the road that provides many opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and picnicking. During the wintertime, Big Cottonwood is the spot for sledding, especially if you desire lots of fresh powder. Below are two sledding areas located up Big Cottonwood Canyon that are well worth checking out. Donut Falls Sledding Area Location Donut Falls Sledding Area is located halfway up Big Cottonwood Canyon (about 9 miles) and sits at the mouth of Mill D South. Cost Donut Falls is free! Description Nestled just below Kessler Peak, lies Donut Falls Sledding Area. This sledding spot is located in the perfect mountain setting and offers multiple hills that are perfect for all levels of sledding experience. There are multiple hills to choose from that vary in height and steepness. Many of the hills are perfect for little children due to there small height and gradual slope. Donut Falls is a popular place and can get a little crowded in the parking area. However, on the hill, people have enough room to spread out and enjoy sledding. Additional Information Sledders will have to bring their own sleds and tubes. It is also important to note that there are no restrooms, no warming huts, and no areas to rent equipment. Be sure to bring food and water. Be sure to dress warm! Spruces Campground Sledding Area Location This sledding area is just 2 minutes up the road from Donut Falls and is located on the right side of the road. Cost Free. Description Spruces Campground is not as popular as Donut Falls, therefore it is a great place to go if you want to beat the crowds. It offers a couple of decent hills for sledding or tubing. Spruces Campground is located in a beautiful area that is heavily forested with pine trees. It is a great place to enjoy the fresh aroma of the pines as you sled down the snow covered hills. Additional Information Spruces Campground does have restrooms and picnic areas. Also, if you drive a couple of miles up the road you will arrive at Solitude and Brighton Ski Resorts. Both of which are located in a beautiful area and offer great skiing. 2. Sugarhouse Park Location 1358 2100 South, Salt Lake City Sugarhouse Park is located just 10 minutes southeast of downtown Salt Lake City. It is just north of I-80. Cost Free. Hours Everyday 7 am to 9 pm. Description This 110.5-acre park has several hills that are perfect for sledding. There are two main hills that are used for sledding. One is located off of 1700 E and is smaller and is better for children. The other located off of 1300 E. This hill is bigger, steeper, and more popular. You can enjoy the views while sledding as well. Sugarhouse Park provides good opportunities to view the snow-covered mountains on a clear day. There is also a beautiful pond in the middle of the park that is worth checking out. Additional Information Sugarhouse park also provides 7 covered pavilions with picnic tables and bathroom facilities. Feel free to bring your dog sledding as well! Just make sure they are leashed. 3. Soldier Hollow Location 1370 West Soldier Hollow Lane Midway, UT Soldier Hollow is about an hour southeast of Salt Lake, near a little mountain town called Midway. Cost Rates range from $12 to $27 depending on the age of the individual and the desired time of the reservation. Group discounts are available. For more detailed information visit their website. Hours Monday - Thursday from 12 pm to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 2 pm. Description Even though Soldier Hollow is a bit of a drive from Salt Lake, it is well worth going. Soldier Hollow offers an amazing tubing experience and has the longest tubing lanes in Utah clocking in at 1,200 feet. Not only will you get a long and enjoyable ride, but you don't even have to worry about hiking back up. You can just hitch a ride on the recently upgraded tow lift. Tickets include the tube in their price and offer you a 2-hour long tubing session. Additional Information Slots and tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis. I would suggest reserving your tickets online in advance. 4. Creekside Park Location 1665 E. 4800 So., Salt Lake City Creekside Park is on the south side of Murray/Holladay Rd about two blocks west of the Cottonwood Mall. It is only a 10-15 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake. Cost Free. Hours Everyday from 10 am to 10 pm. Description Creekside Park may just be a neighborhood park but it has a great hill that is perfect for sledding. When the winter snow storms blow in, this large grassy area is turned into a winter wonderland. There is one big hill in the park that is renowned among sledders and tubers. For that reason, it can get a little crowded on a snowy day. Additional Information Be sure to bring your own sled and pack some snack and some water. After a good sledding session, you can relax and enjoy each others company in the picnic area that is offered by Creekside Park. 5. Gorgoza Park (Woodward Park City) Location 3863 West Kilby Rd. Park City, Utah This facility is located 25 - 30 minutes east of Salt Lake in Park City. It is right off of I-80. Cost Rates range from $7 to $46 and vary depending on age and amount of hours purchased. To get a more detailed look at pricing I suggest you visit their website. Description Gorgoza Park is currently undergoing construction and transformation to become Woodward Park City. It was closed all winter of 2018-2019 but will be opening up in November of 2019. There numerous changes being done to Gorgoza Park. An expansion of the tubing hills is being done, in addition to the construction of different facilities. When opened this park will offer 7 different tubing lanes with tow lifts and lighting. This will be perfect if you want to enjoy sledding under the stars. Gorgoza is great for thrill seeking adults and it is safe for children as well. When it comes to snow activities, sledding isn't the only thing that your kids can do. They also offer rentals of mini snowmobiles that can be ridden around a circular track. There is also an option to sign your little ones up for ski and snowboarding lessons. This is a good way to ease your kids into skiing and snowboarding before you hit the actual slopes at a ski resort. A section of the tubing hill is called Fort Frosty and is perfect for the kiddos to sled on a safer and smaller hill. Additional Information If you are burnt out on sledding, the new Woodward Park City will include a 52,000 square ft. facility that includes trampolines, foam pits, lounge areas, a coffee shop, cafeteria, equipment rentals, and an indoor skate park. Luna Lobos Dog Sledding Location 4733 Browns Canyon Rd, Peoa, UT Luna Lobos is located 40 minutes west of Salt Lake City near Park City right off of Brown's Canyon Rd. Cost There are many different packages and activities that vary in price. For the sled rides and tours one can expect to spend $140 per adult and $125 per child. For complete pricing information visit their webpage. Hours Everyday from 8 am to 7 pm. Description Luna Lobos Dog Sledding is by far the most unique sledding experience on this list. It will likely be one that you will never forget! Rather than sledding down a hill, you will be pulled on a sled by a team of dogs. This place will transport you to the arctic where dogsledding has been around for thousands of years. The sled ride also includes a tour of the kennel and gives you a chance to play and interact with the dogs. It is a very hands-on--behind the scenes look into the world of dogsledding. The sled ride package also gives you the opportunity to feel what it's like to be a musher as you jump on the back of the sled. Luna Lobos Dog Sledding is open year round and offers a variety of other fun-filled and interesting activities. There is a summer camp for the kids where they learn a variety of skills such as archery and dog training. In addition to that, if there is no snow a dog sled safari ride is also an option. They tend to be booked full for months on end. The best way to be able to enjoy this unique experience is to reserve spots online. The sled rides take you on a beautiful ride and you will be fully immersed in the dogsledding experience for an hour to and hour and a half. Each sled can fit a two adults and one small child. 7. Rock Canyon Park Location 1200 E. 2620 North, Provo Rock Canyon Park is located in Provo which is 45 minute to an hour drive from Salt Lake City. Cost Free. Description Nestled right up against the towering Timpview mountains you will find Rock Canyon Park. This park is a local favorite and is perfect for sledding. Its hills form somewhat of a bowl-shaped valley that flattens out at the bottom. The hills are pretty steep but all the speed that you catch going down the hill will slowly be put to a gradual stop when you reach the bottom of the hill. Rock Canyon Park attracts a lot of college students from the local university but it is also great for little kids as well. The sides of the bowl are not as steep and provide a more kid-friendly ride. Additional Information The park has a great parking area. There are also restrooms, picnic tables, and pavilions. The snow is usually packed down well which makes a smooth and fast ride. Be aware that many people build jumps on this hill. Be careful which part of the hill you decide to go down, or else you may be flying instead of sledding! 8. Peteetneet Academy Location 10 S. 600 East, Payson This sledding area is located just a little bit south of Rock Canyon in a city call Payson. It is an hour drive from Salt Lake right off of I-15. Cost Free. Description Peteetneet Academy is a beloved sled spot amongst the locals. Because of this, it is often crowded. That being said, there is generally room for everyone on the slopes. The sledding hill is located to the west of the parking lot of the Peteeneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center. It is a good-sized hill that is wide and long enough to accommodate a crowd of people. You will be screaming with joy as you zoom down this hill. It tends to be a pretty fast ride because the snow gets packed down pretty good. Additional Information Be sure to dress warm and bring your own sled or tube. Many recommend a tube for this hill because it provides a smoother and faster ride. 9. Jolley's Ranch Location Right Fork Hobble Rd, Springville, UT Jolley's Ranch is an hour south of Salt Lake. It is right outside of Springville, 3 miles up Hobble Creek Canyon. Cost Free. You can rent a sled or a tube for $3. Hours Monday - Tuesday from 3 pm to 8 pm and Wednesday - Sunday from 12 pm to 8 pm. Description This sledding spot is somewhat of a hidden gem. It is a 360-acre camping site in the summer but is also for sledding and tubing in the winter. Jolley's Ranch offers groomed tubing and sledding hills in an amazingly scenic area. Nowhere else will you be able to enjoy this smooth of a sledding experience for free. The sledding and tubing hills have designated runs with stopping areas and coned of sections that are set aside to allow you to walk up. All of these measures ensure that you have the safest sledding experience possible. Be sure to stop by their vending area to grab a hot chocolate or a filling snack after you are done sledding. Additional Information You can rent sleds and tubes at the main building that is shaped like a yurt. There is also parking available near the yurt. In addition to grooming, sledding, rentals, and food vending, Jolley's Ranch also provides heated restrooms and warming hut. This is ideal for cold winter days! 10. Mountain Del Golf Course Location I-80, Salt Lake City, UT Mountain Del Golf Course is 15-20 minutes east of Salt Lake. It is a little way up I-80 into Parley's Canyon (exit 134). Cost Free. Description This Golf Course provides great views of the mountains and opportunities to see wildlife such as hawks, eagles, moose, etc. It is also a wonderful free place to go sledding. You can sled down the various hills while taking the majestic scenery. The runs are loads of fun to go down and are pretty long. The main (and best) hill is located just behind the clubhouse. It is pretty steep and offers a long ride. Keep in mind that the longer the ride the harder the walk up will be. Additional Information Mountain Dell is quite popular so it tends to get a little bit crowded, especially on the weekends. I would suggest going earlier in the day or going on a weekday rather than on the weekend. Mountain Dell is located on the Salt Lake City Watershed, therefore there are no dogs allowed. 11. Bella Vista Elementary School Location 2131 Fort Union Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, UT This sledding area is located 20 minutes southeast of Salt Lake in Cottonwood Heights. It is right off of I-215. Cost Free. This sledding hill is a perfect option for the little ones. It located right by the elementary school and offers a shorter and safer ride. Bella Vista is not only a good place to take your kids sledding, but can also be a great place for other snow activities, such as snowman building or snowball fights. Additional Information Be sure to dress warm and bring your own sled or tube. 12. Lindsey Gardens Location M Street and 9th Avenue Salt Lake City, Utah Lindsey Gardens is very close to downtown Salt Lake (about 10 minutes away). It is located just northeast of the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Cost Free. Description Lindsey Gardens is a great area for sledders who are looking for a steeper and more adrenaline-filled ride. It is regarded as one of the steepest sledding hills in Salt Lake City. Many also say it is their personal favorite. This hill will give you a thrill as you are sliding down it and the views at the top are second to none. Additional Information Due to the steepness of this particular sledding hill, it may not be a good idea to bring inexperienced sledders or little kids to this spot. It is also important to note that the hill is south-facing and the snow can melt quickly on a sunny day. So it is better to go soon after a storm rather than later. 13. Flat Iron Mesa Park Location 1700 East 8600 South Sandy, UT Flat Iron Mesa Park is 20-25 minutes south of Salt Lake City near Little Cottonwood Canyon. Cost Free. Description Flat Iron Mesa is the largest developed park in the city of Sandy at 31.8 acres. It offers a variety of hills and is a fantastic park for those who want speed. Many of the hills are quite steep and wide. This park is a well-known sledding spot amongst those who live in Sandy. It can get a little crowded on the weekends but is normally pretty empty. Additional Information Just like Flat Iron Mesa Park, this park's hill is also south-facing and so the snow is prone to melting quickly. You better catch the snow while it lasts!
