How To Choose a Bow and Arrow Set For a Beginner?
If you’re new to archery and trying to see what bow and arrow set is right for you, it can be pretty overwhelming, to say the least. There are a lot of terms and language that you’re unaware of.
Well, first things first. You need to choose a bow. But what kind?
There are a handful of different types of bows to choose from.
- Compound Bow: Incorporates modern technology while being lightweight and powerful. Compound bows come with a “cam” that rotates as you pull the arrow back. These will typically be the most expensive type of bows you can purchase.
- Recurve Bow: This is your typical bow and arrow set used for thousands of years due to its size-to-power ratio. These are fairly straightforward and cost less than a compound bow.
- Long Bow: These types of bows were used in medieval Europe in the early 1300 to 1600s. Longbows are also very simple in design and not used much in modern day.
- Cross Bow: This lethal piece of equipment is used by placing them on the ground and using your entire body strength to pull them back. These have the most extended range out of the bows discussed and are also the most accurate. These bows are typically not allowed in archery competitions or hunting.

Draw Weight: Draw weight refers to the force required to pull a bowstring fully at draw, typically measured in pounds. Determining your draw weight often involves calculations based on your height and weight. Alternatively, you can employ the 30-second test—pulling back a bow for half a minute. If discomfort arises during this test, the draw weight may not be suitable for you.
Draw Length: This is the distance from the nock point on the string to the throat of the grip when at full draw.
