Beginners Draw Weight

Draw weight is the peak amount of weight an archer will pull when drawing the bowstring back. Bows for beginner archers should have a draw weight of 15-20 lbs for children and between 25-50 lbs for an adult.

Many compound bows have an adjustable draw weight, and the bow I started on took me all the way up to fifty pounds from 35. If you have some upper body strength, then I would recommend something in the 30-40 range.

Go to a bow shop and play around with some weights. When you pull something back, remember that you are going to want to pull it back 30-50 times depending on how long you are shooting for.

If you are using this bow to hunt, many states have a minimum requirement draw weight. 35 is the minimum in my home state of Colorado, so check the laws of your own state or country.

Additional Accessories

If you are planning on buying any one of these archery sets online, these are the things you should have in addition:

  1. A shooting glove, finger tab, or quick release
  2. Armguard
  3. A high-velocity target (something you lay your paper targets on)
  4. Arrows
  5. Sights
  6. String Wax
